Colleges in the state are now being offered access to hundreds of e-journals and research resources across the world through the Information and Library Network (Inflibnet). So far only 150 universities had enjoyed access to Inflibnet.

In fact 128 colleges from Gujarat, affiliated to various universities in the state, have already joined the National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for scholarly content (N-LIST).

This will help college teachers and researchers get access to e-resources that include various internationally acclaimed research journals in almost all the subjects.

Talking about the latest development of extending resource network to colleges, Jagdish Arora, director, of Inflibnet said, “N-List has been working under the National Mission on Education through ICT. It envisages providing access to e-resources subscribed by the UGC-INfoNet Digital Library Consortium to technical institutions (IITs, IISc and NITs) as well as over 6000 government and government-aided colleges.”

He further said they plan to propose an annual membership fee of Rs5000 for colleges in return for downloading the contents.

“As of now 626 colleges have joined the network and of these 128 are from Gujarat. We will also plan to increase our subscription of various resources for the colleges. We are considering one subscription for every 200 colleges,” he said.

While universities have been given access on the basis of static internet protocol addresses, colleges will be given access through broadband internet connection after a process of authentication.

“The Inflibnet centre would work as a nodal agency and as a national monitoring agency for execution of the project. It will take-up the responsibility of providing access to subscribed e-resources to government and government-aided colleges through a set of proxy servers deploying appropriate authorisation and authentication mechanisms,” said, Arora. However, according to the director, the role of N-List will be limited to providing access to the resources. It will not be involved in helping setting up infrastructure in the colleges.
