Govt to soon chalk out modalities for talks with Ulfa: Tarun Gogoi

The Assam government will soon chalk out modalities for holding dialogue with the United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) and said talks can be held even without the presence of the banned group's military chief Paresh Baruah.

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said his government was consulting with the Ulfa leadership, most of whom are in jail in Assam, and working out on the modalities for a possible peace talks.

Gogoi, who briefed prime minister Manmohan Singh on his government's preparedness to hold dialogue with Ulfa, said the negotiation would could held even without the presence of Baruah.

"We can't wait for Paresh Baruah for an indefinite time. We have appealed him to come. But so far the response is not positive," he said.

Gogoi said the services of Central government's interlocutor PC Halder could also be availed for the negotiations with Ulfa leadership.

"We are sincere in holding the talks," he said.

Gogoi also informed Singh about the initiative taken for peace talks by some intellectuals, including Sahitya Akademi awardee Hiren Gohain.

Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, expressed his keeness to meet Gohain and other delegates of the intellectual forum, sources said.

During his meeting with Singh, Gogoi requested him to take necessary action for the construction of a bridge over Brahmaputra connecting Jorhat with Northern bank through Majuli island.

He discussed problems of flood and erosion posed by Brahmaputra river and its tributaries in the state and inundation faced by many parts of Guwahati.

The chief minister also expressed serious concern at the erosion on the southern bank of Brahmaputra in South Salmara-Mankachar subdivision of Dhubri district.

He urged Singh to issue necessary instructions to the Union home ministry for early sanction of the revised estimate of Rs13 crore to protect the link road between Hatsingimari and Assameralga border outpost.

Gogoi also met Union water resources minister Pawan K Bansal and urged him to take up the problem of flash floods caused by rivers orginating in Bhutan with the government of that country, the sources said.
