Government today downplayed reports of ministers going on foreign tours when the first anniversary of the UPA II is being celebrated this week.

"You cannot say they are holidaying. Some may have gone. But the reason is that not many official foreign tours happen when Parliament is in session," minister of state in the PMO, Prithviraj Chavan told reporters here.

Chavan, who is also in-charge of personnel ministry, said usually foreign tours by ministers, signing of international agreements and other meetings are kept on hold when Parliament is in session.

"Several ministers have gone on official tours. Some may have gone on personal tours, there is no objection to that," he added.

His statement comes in the backdrop of reports that several Union ministers were out of the country at a time when UPAII was marking its first anniversary. The report was also critical of them going off to cooler places when several states were reeling under heat wave.

NCP supremo Sharad Pawar will not be attending the celebrations on May 22 as he left for abroad yesterday on a week-long visit.

DMK sources said Union minister MK Alagiri is unlikely to attend the event as he is on a personal visit to the US.

Government sources said DMK chief M Karunanidhi has also been invited for the function.

Though Mulayam Singh Yadav, whose Samajwadi Party is supporting the government from outside, has been invited, it is unclear whether he would attend the function or give it a miss.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has assured of her presence and she conveyed this to prime minister Manmohan Singh, who had yesterday called her up to invite her for the occasion.
