A 21-year-old girl refused to enter into wedlock with the groom fixed for her, when he insisted a few minutes before solemnisation of the marriage, that he would tie the nuptial knot only if he gets more articles than offered to him as dowry.

The girl, however, married another youth present at the venue with the consent of her parents, the family said.

All arrangements were made by the girl's parents for the marriage yesterday with the 26-year-old man, after giving 15 sovereigns of jewels besides some gifts.

However, the bridegroom insisted for more articles than what was actually offered to him, and said he would tie the nuptial knot only when the full list of dowry articles was made available to him.

The elders present at the marriage hall 'counselled' the groom to go ahead with the marriage and his demand would be met after the wedding, for which he agreed.

The 'auspicious' time fixed for the marriage was over by then, and the girl told her parents that she did not want to marry a person who was 'keen more on dowry' than her.

Meanwhile, the girl's parents decided that the girl be married off to a youth, one of their relatives, who was present there. The marriage was solemnised in a temple later.
