The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has asked Madhya Pradesh government to conduct an investigation on a newspaper report which said that girls were allegedly being converted into boys in Indore by hundreds every year at such age where they cannot give their consent for this life changing operation.

Taking cognizance of a report about several hospitals and clinics in Indore performing surgeries on baby girls to change their sex, the NCPCR has sought a detailed report within 15 days from the state government giving list of doctors/hospitals practicing genitoplasty. It has also asked the State government to take action to combat the unethical practice.

“This shocking unprecedented trend, catering to the fetish for a son, is unfolding at Indore’s well known clinics and hospitals on children who are 5 years old. This process is known as Genitoplasty, each case costing about Rs 1.5 lakh. The process involves children being pumped with hormonal treatment as part of the sex change procedure that may be irreversible. It has also been reported in the newspaper report that about seven pediateric surgeons from Indore, associated with top private and government hospitals, perform these surgeries," the NCPCR said.

"The matter amounts to child rights violations in terms of perpetuation of the age old preferences for boys and biases against girl child, discrimination against the female child, the right to health, right to life and dignity and the whole process being highly unethical,” the NCPCR said.
