Prabhulata Parmar, 52, wife of a police officer, died of suffocation on Saturday morning in a city hospital. A fire broke out in her house at officer’s quarters in Shahibaug following a gas leak and she got suffocated when trying to fix the leak by herself, police sources said.

According to the police, a fire broke out in the house opposite police headquarters in Shahibaug at 11:30 am. Police said that Prabhulata informed her husband, deputy superintendent of police (DySP) ND Parmar, on phone about the gas leak from an LPG cylinder in her kitchen.

“Her husband told her to get out of the house immediately and so she and her son left the house. But she returned to the house alone, thinking she would fix the leakage, but got suffocated by the dense smoke caused by the fire,” said Madhavpura police inspector SG Parmar.

Parmar said that when Prabhulata entered the house, the fridge and sofa were already on fire and it was spreading rapidly. There were a couple of blasts in the kitchen due to the gas leak.
