Funeral of man killed in Ludhiana clash passes off peacefully

The funeral of a person who was killed here during a clash between the police and Sikhs objecting to a religious programme, passed off peacefully at his village Lohara today.

Darshan Singh, 54, along with scores of other Sikh radicals was trying to move towards the venue of a religious function organised by Ashutosh Maharaj. When they refused to stop, police resorted to firing, resulting in his death and injuries to several others.

The funeral was attended by a number of Sikh leaders, including Sant Baba Harnam Singh Bhooma, the head of the Damdami Taksal, Bhai Mohakkam Singh, Simranjit Singh Mann, Bhai Jasbir Singh Rhode and Kanwarpal Singh Bittu among others.

The district administration had made tight security arrangements under the direct supervision of the additional director general of police (Law and Order) JP Virdi. The deputy commissioner and senior superintendent of police were also present.

Punjab director general of police PS Gill has been personally monitoring the situation. He visited the city last night to have on the spot assessment of the situation.

Meanwhile, Sikh radical organisations have called for a Punjab shutdown tomorrow. However, essential services including medical, rail and public transport have been exempted from the strike.

The further course of action would be decided on December 12 at a meeting of radical organisations at Gurdwara Gurudarshan Parkash, Mehta. It would be announced on December 14 at the bhog of Darshan Singh in village Lohara.

Meanwhile, in view of the shutdown call, Deputy Commissioner Ludhiana Vikas Garg has issued orders that all schools, colleges and other educational instutions in the district will remain closed tomorrow.
