“We request you to take it up with your department and instruct your officials not to indulge in such things,” the Supreme Court told the Centre’s counsel PP Malhotra.
Concerned about scandalous news stories on Aarushi Talwar being attributed to CBI sources, the Supreme Court (SC) has asked the director of the national premier agency to spot its official who had been allegedly passing on information to the media about Arushi Talwar.
“We request you to take it up with your department and instruct your officials not to indulge in such things,” the court told the Centre’s counsel PP Malhotra.
“Who is the CBI officer?” SC said. It wanted CBI to verify whether the “according to CBI sources” mentioned in the news papers had any basis. “They (officers) are more interested in going to the press than investigate,” the bench added.
Lawyer Pinaki Mishra, who appeared for 14-year-old Arushi’s parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, said the newly-constituted CBI team was proceeding in the direction of the UP Police, which had charged them with the murder of their daughter two years ago.
The parents moved the apex court last month seeking a check on baseless, scandalous and malicious stories published in a section of the media. These stories have been reportedly attributed to CBI sources.
Judges had earlier issued notices to several newspapers regarding this. On Monday it issued more notices to two Delhi-based newspapers.
“Do not sensationalise, Arushi was a young girl of 14 years,” a bench of justices Altamas Kabir and AK Patnaik sought to infuse humane approach among the media and CBI. The scandalous reporting would adversely affect the reputation of the deceased and her family, they said. “We are against sensationalism and character assassination. It is a serious matter,” they added.
