The Foundation for Excellence India Trust (FFEIT), an organisation established by Foundation for Excellence, Santa Clara, USA, on Saturday awarded 178 scholarships to students from Gujarat. The trust gives away bursaries to economically underprivileged students pursuing higher education in engineering, technology and medical streams in India.

FFE, a publicly supported organisation, has so far given scholarships worth more than Rs26 crore to 10,500 students since its foundation in 1994. This year, FFEIT has selected 1,197 scholars for FFE scholarships.

Retired IAS officer, PK Lahiri gave away certificates to FFE scholars. He also honored the past FFE scholars of the state. Current and past FFE scholars, donors and facilitators were also present in on the occasion.

"Gujarat has emerged as a state with one of the highest number of FFE scholars. So far, 1176 students, almost 10% of all the scholarships in India, have been from Gujarat and a total of Rs2.3 crore have been awarded," said Sudha Kidao, chairperson, management committee, trustee for FFE India, and member of US board of FFE trustees.

Kidao added that 19 beneficiaries of the scholarships in the state have become donors and supporters of FFE after taking up professional careers.

Over 3,000 FFE scholars have completed their professional studies and are gainfully employed. Interestingly, over 400 of past FFE scholars, after taking up jobs, have chosen to give back and in the process have become FFE donors.

FFE's network of over 1,000 volunteers identifies eligible scholars, monitors them and provides mentoring support through years of education.

The scholarship amount is Rs25,000 per year for engineering (total of Rs1 lakh over 4 years) and Rs22,500 per year for medicine. Scholarships are renewed annually based on continued academic excellence and financial need. Nearly 40% of FFE scholarship recipients have been girls.
