It seems that the signboards and hoardings owned by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation are back in demand. The civic body received almost three times more money for renting signboards and hoardings on CG Road. The AMC's Estate Management and Town Planning Committee awarded the contract at its meeting on Tuesday. Moreover, the committee also approved Vastral Town Planning (TP) scheme no. 125.

The civic body had invited tenders for renting out signboards and hoardings on CG Road -- from Sardar Patel Stadium to Mahalaxmi Cross Roads. Earlier, the civic body had received annual offer of Rs2.15 crore for renting out signboards and hoardings. The agreement of the earlier contractor is expiring on July 31, so the civic body had invited fresh tenders. A media house turned up with annual rent of Rs6.57 crore to bag the contract.

The earlier contractor had erected poles with lights at their own cost, which has now become the civic body's property and the new contractor just needs to display the advertisement, said Devchand Patel, chairman of AMC's Estate Management and Town Planning Committee.

The committee also okayed Vastral TP No. 125 to promote development in the area. However, the AMC has to lose four plots in the process. The committee overruled the AMC official's suggestion of following draft TP scheme with regard to decision on reserved plot. The committee accepted the town planning officer's decision to remove reservation from four plots where construction activity has started with necessary approval of Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). It could be considered as a big blow for the civic body as it is already reeling under pressure due to severe land crunch.
