While the gangrape victim and her family are receiving the support and condolence of the state and nation, the families of the accused seem to have been ostracised by the society. Even friends and community members have snapped ties with them after the incident, leaving them in isolation.

The news has shocked the families of all three accused, and they cannot understand what stirred them to partake in such an act. Rebuked by their friends and community, the parents of the trio are unable to cope with the tragedy.

According to Kutubuddin Saiyed, father of Tariq who is one of the accused in the case, his family is serving a bigger punishment than his son. While expressing faith in god and the law, he said that he and his family would accept whatever verdict is passed by the judiciary.

“He (Tariq) has brought disgrace to me and my family. I cannot face anybody in society, my community or work place. It has been four days since the news is out, but nobody in my family has eaten till now. I feel more ashamed because I am a cop and my work requires me to maintain law and order. My family is innocent, but they are paying for Tariq’s misdeeds. I haven’t met him after the incident,” Saiyed added.

“We don’t know what provoked Tariq to commit the crime. His father is a very pious and honest man, and had a very good reputation in the community. He is shaken by the incident, while his mother is crying inconsolably. I think he got into the wrong company. He is still in class XII and no one at this tender age can think of planning something as outrageous as a gangrape,” said a close relative of the family.

Friends of the three accused were also shocked when they learnt about the incident. “Shahid has always been calm; he rarely argued or fought with anyone in the neighbourhood. His father has stopped talking to anybody after the incident while community members are maintaining a distance from the family. People’s attitude has changed completely, but my family and I are still with them. I condemn the act and wish the strictest punishment for the trio, but I see no reason why the innocent family must be made subject to such unjust treatment,” said Rashid Pathan, one of Shahid’s friends.
