After parting ways with Congress, actor-turned-politician Raja Bundela today formed a new political outfit to fight for a separate state of Bundelkhand and announced to contest from 37 seats in the coming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Bundela, who was associated with the Congress till last year, said that his party 'Bundelkhand Congress' would have no alliance in the Bundelkhand region and finalise its candidates on the suggestions of the locals.

He said that though his party would go alone on 37 seats in the region, it was open to alliance elsewhere in the state.

"Bundelkhand Congress that has been registered with the Election Commission aims at creation of a separate Bundelkhad state which was necessary for the growth of the region as no amount of packages would be of any assistance to its development," Bundela told newspersons in Lucknow.

"Around 580 farmers have committed suicide in the region and this trend continued even after Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited the region recently," he said.

He said his party would fight for a separate Bundelkhand state through Gandhian methods and would resort to 'anshan' if required.

Asked the reason for parting ways from Congress, Bundela said that it was because Bundelkhand statehood was not on the agenda of that party.

"We have launched the new party which promises to fight for the cause of long suffering farmers, women, children and youth of the region, besides ensuring development of education, tourism sectors and safeguarding its rich mineral resources," he added.
