Addressing the need for an entrepreneurship policy for the country, the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) has come up with a draft National Entrepreneurship Policy.

The draft was prepared following consultations with close to 100 people, including academicians, industrialists and incubators.

It should be noted that at the convocation held at EDI early this year, Sam Pitroda, the chief guest for the event, had suggested a need for such a policy and had asked EDI to come up with a draft regarding the same. EDI director Dinesh Awasthi elaborated that this was just an initial draft.

“We are looking forward to everyone’s feedback so that we can ensure a robust entrepreneurship policy,” said Awasthi.

“There are many project reports being submitted by engineering graduates across the state yet none of them materialises into actual projects. We are looking at creating an environment that will foster and boost entrepreneurship,” said Awasthi.

He said this policy was of utmost importance as unlike the US, India does not have a strong backing of angel investors and venture capitalists.

One of the things that the policy stresses on is the need for a proper co-ordinating agency to help promote entrepreneurship.

The proposed policy, though focuses primarily on innovative, nascent start-up and growth oriented entrepreneurs, also addresses the concerns of self-employed micro entrepreneurs and under-represented groups.

The institute also plans to hold consultative meets in 14 major cities including tier-II ones like Pune, Lucknow, Hyderabad, etc. Further inputs from experts and institutes have also been invited following which a final draft will be made and submitted to the government of India for consideration. The institute also took into consideration the entrepreneurship policies of 19 countries including those like Canada and Rwanda while preparing the draft for the same.
