Seven female members of Democratic Students Organisation (DSO) were allegedly thrashed by policemen of Navrangpura police station on Monday. They had gathered near HK Commerce College at Ashram Road to ask students to support their 'bandh' call. But, police officials, who reached there without any women constables, allegedly beat up some female DSO members, who alleged that the male cops manhandled them and even tore their clothes.

Early on Monday, Navrangpura police were informed that DSO members were creating a ruckus near HKCC. After reaching the spot without any policewomen, the two constables called their senior officials to control the situation which was threatening to go out of control. Cops said that DSO members were forcing the students to take part in the 'bandh'.

The DSO members, however, denied that they had indulged in violent protes. "However, the police inspector rushed at us and started beating us for no reason. They manhandled and misbehaved with female members," claimed Bhavik Raja, president, DSO. The police arrested him along with eight other members on charges of rioting

"They used foul words. Worse, they tore some girls' clothes in front of everyone," said Minakshi Joshi, a senior DSO member.

When asked why police resorted to such an act, PM Sarvaiya, senior police inspector, Navrangpura police station claimed that DSO members forced the police to take such action by not listening to them.

"We asked them to disperse from the spot but they didn't listen to us. We cannot wait for women constables to come and control them. So, we did what we were supposed to do as police," said Sarvaiya.

He further said that two women constables were quickly called at the time of arrest.
