In an unusual case, a wife has filed a case under dowry prohibition Act alleging that her husband never had any physical relation with her in their one year of marriage. She further alleged that her husband is a homosexual and has had sexual relations with his friend.

Sonal Mehta, MCom graduate from Ahmedabad, married Gautam Mehta in an arranged marriage on December 10, 2010. Hardly a year into the wedding on October 23, she lodged a complaint against her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law and her husband’s friend.

In the complaint she has alleged that soon after her wedding, her husband and in-laws started harrasing her. On the first night of their wedding itself, she has alleged that her husband Gaurav Mehta fought with her for not bringing dowry and did not have any physical relation with her. The same routine followed every day, with her mother-in-law and father-in-law Usha Mehta and Mahesh Mehta joining hands to torture her for dowry.

She further alleged that one of Gautam’s friend, Nilesh Gandhi, used to come to their place very frequently. She was told that Gautam had borrowed money from him so he came to ask for it. However, she alleged that he too used to join Gautam in the tirade against her.

She has further alleged that her in-laws had frequently asked her to leave the house to get money from her uncle. Once they had borrowed money and paid them back. When Gautam began working in Mumbai, they left for Mumbai too. But the demands continued and she was again asked to leave the house. When she returned with money, Nilesh snatched money from her hand and abused her. With his interference in their life she suspected her husband was having a homosexual relationship with Gandhi.

She has filed a complaint against all the three for threatening her life, for demanding dowry and mental and physical harassment. The police arrested her in-laws and her husband on November 2. However, they were released on bail after which they were sent to judicial custody by the court.

While talking to DNA, Mehta’s lawyer, Gulab Khan Pathan said that the allegations made by Sonal are false and have been made only to harass Mehta’s family members.
