Though the opposition parties are yet to adopt a common approach on the issue of moving cut motions to embarrass the government on the crucial Finance Bill, they are gearing up to give some anxious moments to the UPA.

The fledgling ‘third front’ — a loose conglomerate of 13 non-BJP parties — on Thursday called for a Bharat Bandh on April 27 to coincide with their plan to move cut motions in Lok Sabha on the same day before the passage of the Finance Bill.

Although representatives of the 13 parties put up a united face while sharing the platform to declare their plans, they were non-committal on whether they had the strength to upstage the government during voting on cut motions.

CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury was quick to clarify that the combine was not working to destabilise the government. “There is speculation that we are seeking to remove the government. The issue is not of destabilising, but of price rise,” he said.

The grouping that includes the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal, Telugu Desam, AIADMK and the Left was not sure whether BJP, the main opposition party, would make a common cause with them on this issue.

The ‘third front’ has a combined strength of 88 members.

Describing themselves as a ‘non-communal’ combine, their leaders desisted from soliciting BJP support for the cause.

However, the saffron party has hinted at backing the front during the course of voting on the cut motions. “We will be moving cut motions on our own also. But we will vote in favour of the cut motions moved by any other party,” Gopinath Munde, BJP deputy leader in Lok Sabha, said.
