The Sola police on Wednesday arrested two debt-ridden diamond workers for the murder of Darshan Pandya on Monday night.

The duo was arrested on the basis of information provided by another person, who was detained by the police on Tuesday.

Jitendra Kakadia (24), a resident of Forum Bungalows on Nikol Road, and Manish Patel (29) have been arrested for Pandya’s murder. Bhavesh Patel (26), a resident of Krishnanagar, had helped the duo purchase jewellery with the victim’s credit and debit cards and also to withdraw money from the same.

“Jitendra drove the car while Manish held Pandya in the back seat of the vehicle,” said police inspector NR Chauhan of the Sola police station. “When Pandya tried to resist and began shouting, the two of them stabbed him with a knife.”

Chauhan further said that the duo had been involved in other crimes such as stealing laptops from parked cars and chain snatching.

Kakadia and Patel had been following Pandya for some days prior to his murder. They had waited near his car on August 31 and when he exited his office, Kakadia sat in the driver’s seat while Patel forced him into the rear. The duo also made off with his gold ring, and credit and debit cards. “The letter with his PIN numbers was in the car. The accused took the letter and the two cards,” Chauhan said.

Bhavesh later joined the accused when they went to purchase jewellery using the stolen cards. They sought to buy jewellery worth Rs48,000, but were unable to take delivery of the same as the jeweller asked for proof of identity. They then called Patel to the shop.
“The jeweller found blood on Manish’s clothes. He told them that they could take delivery of the jewellery only after showing some identification,” Chauhan said.

The trio left the shop without their purchases, going on to Shyam Shikhar Complex at Bapunagar where they withdrew Rs50,000 from an ATM. “They distributed the money among themselves and then went to their respective homes,” Chauhan said.

However, when Bhavesh returned to the jewellery shop the next day, the jeweller called the police and he was nabbed. He later disclosed the details of the crime, on the basis of which the arrests were made.
