One of the most ambitious projects of the state government — a new international airport in Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) — has got two major site clearances, one from the ministry of defence and the other from civil aviation ministry. The SIR is located some 100 km from Ahmedabad in Navagam village.

The state government had been waiting for these clearances for almost two years. The estimated cost of the proposed airport is pegged at Rs2,500 crore.

A highly placed source in the state government saidthe state government has received two site clearance certificates which will help speed up the implementation of the project."

The ministry of defence and civil aviation issued the no objection certificate (NOC) for the construction of airport at Dholera on the condition that the government fulfils all technical requirements.

The state government will now require only one clearance - from the ministry of environment and forest. And even that is expected to come soon if the DPR and TRFR submitted to the ministry of civil aviation is given a clearance. If everything goes as planned, construction of the airport may start in the next 4-6 months, the source added.
