Delhi police arrested nearly 400 in 5 years for betting

Out of the total 157 registered cases, a highest of 57 were registered during 2006, following 47 in 2007 and 37 such cases in 2005, according to official figures.

Delhi police has arrested about 400 people in the past five years on the charges of betting on cricket in the city.

Out of the total 157 registered cases, a highest of 57 were registered during 2006, following 47 in 2007 and 37 such cases in 2005, according to official figures.

Delhi police filed 11 cases last year and only five cases between January and November 15 this year.

A total of 398 people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in betting during the said period.

While 127 people were arrested in 2006, 122 were arrested in 2005 and 113 in 2007, the data said. Twenty six people have been arrested last year and only 10 have been taken into the custody this year.

Police recovered an amount of Rs3,79,190 during the said period including Rs2,40,240 in 2005, Rs66,800 in 2006 and Rs57,350 in 2007. They also seized cash of Rs11,500 during 2008 and Rs3,300 this year, it said.

A senior Delhi police official said, "We have already directed beat constables to pay special attention in their areas to check betting on cricket and other illegal activities."
