Delhi Metro will face tough questions from the Urban Development Ministry on safety ssues, including a series of accidents and derailments involving it, at the Board Meeting tomorrow which comes three days after a metro train jumped off the tracks in east Delhi.

Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran, who is also the Chairman of DMRC, said Sunday's derailment of a metro train is on the agenda of tomorrow's meeting. The meeting, which was scheduled for tomorrow much before the incident, will discuss issues related to safety on the transport system over which questions have been raised recently.

"The incident has been taken seriously. Safety issues will be raised in the meeting tomorrow. This is the second time a derailment is happening. So the Board will discuss this issue," Ramachandran told PTI.

However, Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy sought to make light of the derailment saying, "small accidents like this happen. These are being exaggerated. Delhi Metro is a magnificent project the country is proud of."

The ministry has convened a meeting of the board headed by Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran, who is also Chairman of the DMRC.

"Earlier, they had taken safety measures in construction sites. Now something has to be done on the operation side also," Ramachandran said, adding the report of the August 12 derailment will also be placed before the Board.

"The board will discuss threadbare the safety issues concerning the Delhi Metro at the meeting. This is the third incident to hit the organisation in two months. The ministry will raise all the issues with the DMRC officials," sources at the ministry said.

Urban Development Ministry, which has 50 per cent stake in DMRC, will also raise issues regarding the safety in the transport system during the meeting which is expected to be attended by DMRC Chief E Sreedharan.

Yesterday's mishap was the second incident of a metro train with passengers jumping off the tracks in two months. On August 12, a Metro train with 34 passengers derailed but no one was injured.

Most of the derailing and signalling problems have occurred on the Yamuna Bank-Dwarka Sector-9  which Metro officials say is due to increased "pressure".
