Metro rail services in the national capital were affected for over two hours today after a train stopped on the tracks due to power failure, causing inconvenience to hundreds of passengers who were stranded at various stations in the morning hours.

Services were affected on Line 3 (Dwarka Sector 9 to Noida City Centre) after the train heading for Dwarka Sector 9 stopped when its pantographs (which draw power from the overhead electrification line) developed a problem at Uttam Nagar east metro station.

"Both its pantographs got lowered and the train could not move at around 9.15am. Upon examination, Rolling Stock staff found that the pantographs had become defective, DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal said.

He added that 250 passengers on the train were de-boarded at Uttam Nagar East station.

Single line services were started between Janakpuri West and Dwarka at 9.22am while the services remained normal between Janakpuri and Noida Sector 32, he said.

Rini Desai, a management student, said she had to wait for more than an hour to get a Metro. "I got delayed by an hour for my classes. There was no announcement on the delay. There was a huge crowd at the station," she said.

Agitated over the delay, some passengers at the Dwarka Sec-9 station went to ticket counters and sought refund of their money. There was huge rush of passengers at the Rajiv Chowk, the usually crowded junction, where people were stranded not knowing what to do. Similar scenes were seen at stations like Yamuna Bank and Karol Bagh also.

The incident comes a fornight after a train, part of which was in a tunnel, stopped on tracks due to power failure leading to disruption of services for more than two hours.

Meanwhile, emergency access to track was granted to electrical staff at 10.05am and at 10.42am, a rescue train was coupled with the stalled train.

The stalled train was then pushed by the rescue train from Uttam Nagar East to Najafgarh depot. Normal services on the entire line resumed at 11.37am, Dayal said.

Shyamali, a software professional who usually takes a Metro from Dwarka, said she waited for more than 30 minutes for the metro. "There was no announcement about the dealy. We were waiting for a long time."

Preliminary investigation suggested some foreign object may have got entangled in the Overhead Electrification (OHE) line leading to interface problems between the OHE wires and the pantograph of the affected train, Dayal said.

The GM (Maintenance) DMRC will be inspecting the affected site after the close down of operations so that further details and corrective actions can be taken.

Due to the incident, six round trips had to be cancelled and eight trains performed single line operation between Janakpuri West and Dwarka.
