Delhi high court judges, chief justice make their assets public

The development took place in the backdrop of Delhi high court's verdict in which it had said the judges declaration of assets to the their chief justices was mandatory and such information should be made public.

The Delhi high court, which gave a landmark ruling that the chief justice of India was within the ambit of RTI Act, today made public assets of its judges.

All the 42 judges, including the chief justice AP Shah, placed the details of their assets on the high court's website. Delhi High Court has thus become the third high court to make public assets of their judges after Kerala and Madras.

The Supreme Court had last year put the details of their judges' assets on the website. The development took place in the backdrop of Delhi high court's verdict in which it had said the judges declaration of assets to the their chief justices was mandatory and such information should be made public.

A bench headed by the Justice Shah had held on January 12 that CJI's office comes in the ambit of Right to Information Act and the information on Judges'assets is to be made public. The Delhi high court chief justice in his declaration said he, along with his family members, has got assets to the tune of Rs4.27 crore which also include a flat worth Rs2.52 crore in Mumbai where his parents live.

Justice Shah said he has individually made investments such as bank deposits, shares, mutual fund and insurance policies to the tune of Rs1.02 crore.

The remaining investment of Rs 73 lakh was jointly made by him along with family members. He also owns an office at posh Nariman Point area in South Mumbai which has been put on rent. However, its market value has not been revealed in the declaration.

Justice Madan B Lokur, the senior most judge after Justice Shah, owned two flats one in South Delhi and another at Pune in Maharashtra. But the value of the properties has not been revealed. He in his declaration said he owned movable properties to the tune of Rs 43.38 lakh which included bank balance,
fixed deposits, provident funds and insurance policies.

He also has joint bank accounts with his wife and brother in which Rs13.40 lakh is deposited. He also has invested in shares of various companies but did not disclose their market value.


    
Justice Geeta Mittal, who has declared financial investments of only Rs 18 lakhs, appears to be at the bottom in the list in the matters of assets. Justice AK Sikri in his declaration said he has a house
in Greater Noida in which he had invested Rs8.5 lakh and has made investment of Rs87.99 lakh in various schemes including fixed deposits. He has also invested in shares and mutual funds but their
market value has not been mentioned in the declaration.

Justice SK Kaul mentioned he, along with his wife, has made investments to the tune of Rs1.71 crore in various financial schemes. Justice Kaul and his wife have invested in shares of various companies but their market value has not been mentioned in the declaration. The judge also owns eight houses in various states including in Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Haryana.

Justice BD Ahmed's property details includes various immoveable properties either gifted or inherited from ancestors located in various parts of the country including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Assam. The details of his properties also include large tracts of agricultural land and various investments made by him and his wife.

The investments made by him and his wife also includes the shares of various companies and the total assets runs in crores. Though justice Pradeep Nandrajog does not own any immovable property in his own name, he and his spouse have made various financial  investments of about 95 lakhs.

Justice Anil Kumar, along with his spouse, holds in excess of 5400 shares as well as financial investments of around Rs 62 lakhs in addition to a monthly investment scheme of Rs 1.33 lakh.

Justice Ravindra Bhat, whose verdict that the CJI's office comes under the ambit of the RTI Act was upheld by the division bench, conjointly with his wife holds 3694 shares of various companies apart from financial investments amounting to Rs 76 lakhs and three properties in the capital.

Justice Rekha Sharma owns one flat in Dwarka and a partly-built propertly at Greater Noida. She also has agricultural land in Himachal Pradesh among others.

As per the declaration, she has Rs 1.13 lakh in her PPF account and another Rs 15.9 lakh in GPF account. Sharma also has savings bank account of Rs 45,956 and two insurance policies.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna owns a three bed room flat in South Delhi and has got share in a house in EastDelhi and in a piece of land in Himachal Pradesh. He has got deposits in banks to the tune of Rs 53 lakh, PPF worth Rs 21.60 lakh, GPF Rs 32.68 lakh. His spouse has bought shares in 15 listed companies.

Justice Shiv Narayan Dhingra has a plot and a three bed-room flat in Delhi registered under his spouse's name. He also has fixed deposit of Rs 15 lakh, GPF of over Rs 30.44 lakh and PPF worth Rs 14,110. He owns a total of 330 shares in three companies. His spouse also has fixed deposit of Rs 2 lakh.
