New Delhi: Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit today put in a word to tackle the problem of hunger by telling students to control food wastage and wasteful consumption.

"Delhi's students are very sensitive. They have made several public awareness campaigns, such as those against crackers and plastic bags, successful. I am sure they will generate awareness on judicious consumption of food," she said.

Dikshit asked students to be aware of the realities of hunger, which was closely related to wastage of food. She was speaking at a function organised by the United Nations World Food Programme, to give away awards to students for writing essays about innovative strategies to fight hunger in India.

WFP's India representative and country director Mihoko Tamamura said "we need to push ourselves harder in order to help the world's poor, who are going through a difficult time with high food prices.
