CPI(M) urges PM to take lead in defusing tension on Mullaperiyar dam issue

The CPI(M) Tuesday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take initiative in defusing tension whipped up by "chauvinist forces" between people of Tamil Nadu and Kerala over the Mullaperiyar dam issue.

Expressing concern over recent attacks on some houses and shops on the border between the two states, the party Politburo said these incidents were "unfortunate given the longstanding harmonious and good relations between the peoples of the two states".

"The chauvinist forces who are seeking to whip up tensions on both sides of the border should be rebuffed," it said and appealed to the people of both states not to fall prey to provocations and maintain traditional friendship and good neighbourliness.

The Politburo, which is meeting in Delhi, stressed the need for the Centre to intervene and take steps to ensure safety of the dam.

"The prime minister himself should take the initiative with both state governments for this. This is required pending the final decision by the Supreme Court," the CPI(M) said.

The issue "has to be settled keeping in mind both aspects" the safety of the dam and the provision of water to Tamil Nadu," it added.
