Expressing concern over renewed violence in the Darjeeling hills, the Trinamool Congress today alleged that the CPI-M was responsible for the violence and lawlessness in the state.

CPI-M's main intention is to delay the holding of Assembly election by instigating violence, Trinamool Congress secretary general Partha Chatterjee told reporters here.

"It is doing so as it apprehends losing the coming elections. The current violence in Darjeeling is a conspiracy to divide the people of the hills and plains and the CPI-M was responsible for it," Chatterjee said.

Dismissing the CPI-M's allegation that the party had links with the GJM, Chatterjee while referring to party chief Mamata Banerjee's visit to Darjeeling some time back said, "If she had not gone there, she would been accused of inciting trouble. But the same charge is levelled against her now for going to Darjeeling where she met a cross-section of the people."

Chatterjee, who is the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, said the Left Front government was playing the Darjeeling card to divide between the hills and plains people for its political gain and demanded advancing the polls.

The Trinamool Congress would resist the move and wanted the people of the plains and the hills to remain united, he said without elaborating.

"We want peace and tranquility to return to Darjeeling and a stop to violence and use of guns," he said when reporters asked if he would appeal to the GJM to stop violence.
