The Delhi Police will take Shahzad Ahmad, an arrested Indian Mujahideen operative, to Batla House and reconstruct the September 19, 2008, encounter there which led to the death of inspector (special cell) Mohan Chand Sharma.
Ahmad was in the house when the policeman was killed. He was arrested from Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday. The Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative is accused of planting bombs at the children’s park near India Gate, Gaffar Market and participating in a conspiracy to set off serial blasts in top educational institutions.
Ahmad had reached the capital on September 1 to get a visa for Australia where he wanted to study aviation, but was “brainwashed” into joining militancy by Delhi serial blasts mastermind Atif Amin.
Ahmad was produced in court for his involvement in the Sharma’s killing. “Shahzad was in the same house the day Sharma was killed. He escaped after shooting at the police. We will take him to the L18 address in Jamia Nagar where he was residing. Then we will reconstruct the day and find out his exact role,” said a Delhi Police officer.
The police have strengthened security arrangements at Batla House since they expect unruly behaviour from local people who believe Shahzad is being framed.
The police are also planning to talk to Shahzad’s former neighbours and college students. They believe this might give them a clearer idea of his role in the blasts and the shootout.
“We’ll ask neighbours and acquaintances where Ahmad was at the time of the blasts and the shootout,” said an officer.
Two IM militants and Sharma were killed in the September 19 shootout in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar locality.
