The Vastrapur police on Wednesday raided a hookah running illegally near Vastrapur lake and arrested three, including the owner. According to a source in the police, the hookah bar ‘Black Ocean’, located in front of the Havmor ice-cream parlour, was raided in the morning.

Three people, including owner of the bar Anup Soni and his associate Ramu Moliya, were arrested by the police during the raid. Eight students, who were present at the hookah bar, have also been taken into custody as witnesses. The sources said that the police seized two LCD television sets and the property, costing Rs1 lakh.

Interestingly, the accused followed a unique modus operandi to ensure that the bar functioned smoothly. The bar owner and his associates allowed only regular customers to get inside and have hookah. Police Inspector RK Ladva who conducted the raid said,

“The accused had adopted a unique modus operandi. They installed a collapsible door outside the office which could be opened only by them. Only when the customers would
call would the door be opened to let them in.”

The students found at the hookah bar belong to various city colleges and were mostly in first and second year of their college. While four of them belong to SM Patel College, the rest belong to other colleges. The police also seized 9 hookahs and various flavours from the premises of the bar. The source said that the hookah bar had been functioning illegally for the last two months now.

A source close to development said that the students belong to influential families. A source close to the development said, “A mother of one of the students found inside the hookah bar told the police that she had shelved out Rs7 lakh for the admission of her child in a pharmacy college.” The raid was a part of the drive the police have undertaken to restrict the functioning of such illegal hookah bars in the city.
