The city police are once again gearing up to control the rising menace of chain-snatchers in the city. The incidents of chain-snatching have registered a sharp rise in the last few days, particularly in posh localities of Vastrapur and Satellite.

According to sources, the police have started rounding up those with a history of chain snatching behind them. A source said that in the last six years, the police have nabbed around 350 chain-snatchers in the city. The source said that of late police have rounded up around 100 such thieves in different localities in the city. They said that most of the chain snatchers don't live in the area where they execute their plans.

Earlier DNA had reported that the city had witnessed a 60% fall in chain-snatching incidents between December 2009 and March 2010. But then it registered a sudden rise.

"We have instructed our police stations to find out the whereabouts of chain-snatchers and if possible how many of them operate in a particular area. We are going to take measures to curb the rise in such incidents," said joint commissioner of police, sector-1, Satish Sharma.

It's worth mentioning that in the last week alone at least a dozen cases of chain-snatching worth over Rs3 lakh  were reported at different police stations in the city.
