He was posted in an east Delhi police station but used to ride around 15km on his motorcycle to the elite Chanakyapuri area to make extra money allegedly by extorting money from couples at Nehru Park.

However, Valeen Mohammed, who was posted in New Ashok Nagar Police Station, ran into police last week at the Nehru Park following investigations into a complaint filed by a manager of a five-star hotel that a policeman extorted money from him while he was waiting for a friend.

He was arrested on September 6 while allegedly trying to extort money from another man in Nehru Park.

According to the hotel manager, he was waiting for a friend at Nehru Park parking on Niti Marg when the constable approached him and told him his presence in the area was suspicious.

When the complainant took out his purse to show his I-Card that he worked as a manager in a five-star hotel, the constable allegedly snatched the purse and threatened to implicate him in a false case before taking Rs2,000 from it.

A case of extortion was registered following which a sub-inspector went to the spot and asked two other constables on duty about the incident.

A senior police official said they asked two-three couples present at the park to help them in the investigations as they have told them about extortion bids by a policeman.

As the policemen moved around checking for the extortionist and reached a temple behind the park, the official said, a man in uniform saw them and tried to flee from the spot in his motorcycle. However, he was overpowered and placed under arrest.

"Another complainant then appeared and claimed that the constable was trying to extort money from him when the policemen came. He was trying to flee after seeing our men but was arrested," the official said.

According to Delhi Police statistics, around 50 Delhi Police personnel were caught taking bribes this year while over 1,800 faced action for dereliction of duty.

Of the around 50 caught for taking bribes, 25 of them were constables and nine were Head Constables indicating that bribe taking was more prevalent in the lower ranks.

Six sub-inspectors and seven assistant sub-inspectors were also caught taking bribes from people to favour them, a senior police official said.

"From April this year, we have reported 24 cases in which 47 personnel were caught. In one case, an Inspector and his staff were found involved," the official said.

A total of 1,849 policemen, including 147 Inspectors, faced action for dereliction of duty till June 30 this year.

The first six month's figure has already surpassed the figures of 2008 and 2009 when action was taken against 987 and 1,813 police personnel respectively.
