Seems as if the prisoners' obedient behaviour has melted the cold jail authorities' heart. The Sabarmati jail authorities have tied up with Amul, the world famous dairy brand that has been selling ice cream for past few years, allowing the jail inmates to sip on to the cool milk shakes and lap on candies and cone ice creams. It has also set up an ice-cream parlour outside the Sabarmati jail premises.

Amul has placed a deep freezer in the Sabarmati jail kitchen from where prisoners can buy ice creams. "We have tied up with Amul.

While a deep freezer will be placed in the kitchen for the ice creams, an ice-cream parlour will also be installed outside the jail premises. The jail inmates can buy ice creams whenever they want," said Keshavkumar, IG of the jail. "Earlier, we had introduced a similar provision for inmates of Surat and Vadodara jails, and received positive results," he added.

The ice-cream parlour will sell almost all the Amul products at the kiosk installed near the main gate of the Sabarmati jail. The facility can also be availed by hundreds of visitors of the jail and the 500 jail staff.

"We have given the space for the Amul parlour on lease, and have plans to come up with similar parlours in all the 24 jails in the state," said Keshavkumar. "The Amul will contribute 1 per cent of its overall profit to the prisoners' welfare fund. The hundreds of visitors and security personnel who throng the jail premises every day can now buy products from the parlour," he added.

The project is the first of its kind in the city. "We had first installed an Amul parlour at police commissioner's office and it is running successfully. But this will be the first time that we are providing such facility to inmates in the city," said Keshavkumar.

Amul has set up several parlours at various public places in the city. "We are also planning to set up some more at the police lines," said Keshavkumar adding that, "over 3,000 residents of the Ranip police line will also benefit from it."
