Congress today described the controversial Madhya Pradesh police circular on profiling of Christians as "very worrisome" and "unconstitutional".

"The profiling of Christians is very worrisome and serious thing. Such racial, regional and ethnic profiling is unconstitutional," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said, questioning if the BJP government in the state has some "ulterior" motive.

Taking note of the matter, minority affairs minister Salman Khurshid said he will look into it. He said he will try to find out the purpose behind carrying out such an exercise.

The circular which directed all police stations in the state to profile the churches and their source of funding, schools run by the community, political leanings among others was withdrawn after it attracted sharp criticism from the community.

Catholic Bishops Conference of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh demanded a probe in the matter and also wanted to know the purpose of issuing such a circular.
