A day prior to chief minister Narendra Modi's Sadbhavna fast in Patan, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) organised a Jan Adhikar Sammelan in the adjacent district Mehsana on Sunday. The event was a show of power for the state's Congress party.

GPCC president Arjun Modhwadia criticised the state's BJP government and said, "It has become a nightmare for farmers to get electricity connections for agriculture. There are 49,424 such pending applications from the declared dark zone area. When Congress was in power, the electricity charges were cheaper, people used to avail of the state public transport meant for them. However, now state transport buses are used for government functions while the citizens face problems."

Modhwadia also said that the BJP leaders and ministers are corrupt and that is the reason why the chief minister is afraid of appointing a Lokayukta in the state.

Leader of the Opposition, Shaktisinh Gohil compared the development in the state with to Ravana's Lanka. He said, "Ravan's Lanka was made of gold, so that he could be called Vikas Purush (man of development) but Ram had killed him. Today, this state government is thinking only of the wealthy and not of the poor common man."

Former chief minister and GPCC chairman, Shankarsinh Vaghela referred to the Sardarpura massacre case verdict in the context of Modi's Sadbhavana fast. He said, "The Sardarpura verdict is an eye-opener. None of the organisations including BJP, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) or Bajarang Dal has bothered to take care of the families of the people, who were in jail in connection with the post-Godhra train carnage riots. Gimmicks like Sadbhavana fast which are only meant for vote bank politics and capturing the coveted seat of power should be stopped."

Apart from Modhwadia, Gohil and Vaghela, all major leaders of the state Congress including ministers of state in the UPA government Bharatsinh Solanki and Dr Tushar Chaudhary; members of parliament (MP) Alka Kshatriya and Jagdish Thakor; former GPCC president Siddharth Patel and Congress MLAs along with other party leaders were present at the public meeting.
