Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly and Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil has demanded a special package from the state government for farmers growing cotton, potatoes and other food grains. He also announced on Friday that Gujarat Congress farmers' cell will organise rallies at every taluka center to press their demand for the package.

Gohil said, "Gujarat and Maharashtra are two major cotton producing states.”

“This year, while the per hectare production of cotton has fallen because of unfavourable weather conditions, Maharashtra government has announced a package of Rs2,000 crore to cotton growing farmers. The Maharashtra chief minister has announced a relief of Rs3,000 per hectare for cotton farmers, without depending on the union government's assistance. Gujarat CM should also announce a package on similar lines."

He said, "The Gujarat government, which charges VAT to framers on manure, insecticides, pesticides and diesel, should provide affordable prices to the farmers. Gujarat has maximum VAT on diesel. Gujarat sells electricity to other states but four lakh farmers are waiting for electricity connection since BJP rule started in Gujarat. The farmers cell of Gujarat Congress will take out rallies at all taluka headquarters of Gujarat from December 26 and demand a similar package announcement by the Gujarat CM."

Speaking on Maharashtra's pattern, the leader of the opposition said, "For the benefit of farmers the Maharashtra chief minister, this year, has announced special insurance scheme for five types of crops. He has schemes for the development of the cloth industry so that cotton growing farmers get good prices. In addition to this, arrangements have been made so that the farmers get good prices in the state itself. He has also announced reconstitution of a committee to ensure fair prices to farmers."
