In a bizarre incident, health officials of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation were startled by people's reactions when they raided some golawallahs at Law Garden, Usmanpura and Vijay Crossroads.

According to the deputy health officer of west zone, Bhavin Solanki, during the raids many customers asked the AMC officials to let them to enjoy the golas.

"When we were destroying the unhygienic ice, a few customers asked us not to destroy it and give it back to the golawallahs so that they can have more of it," said Solanki.

Amdavadis proved that they love to gorge on street food ranging from dabelis to vada pav or summer coolers, such as ice golas. But people may not be aware that this habit could put them at risk of contracting diseases such as jaundice, and many other water-borne illnesses.

On Wednesday health officials started a campaign against the vendors who are selling/making golas in posh areas of the city. These vendors are on the AMC scanner as the ice which they use in making golas is unhealthy and unhygienic.

Health officials targeted the gola vendors of Usmanpura, and Navrangpura areas. During the summer theses areas remain crowded till late evenings.

However, officials were amazed by the people's attitude as the AMC was doing something for their betterment. Solanki said a woman almost scolded the officers as they were about to 'ruin' her evening by not allowing her to have those delicious, mouth-watering golas.

She was angry because if the raids continued then she would have to search for another golawallah. Indeed, AMC officers followed her as she went from one golawallah to another. "At the third shop, she asked the officers to stop following her as she was  determined to have one gola. She even asked the officers where they were moving next so that she didn't have to go to that vendor and could enjoy her gola from somewhere else," added Solanki, whose request to stop eating unhealthy food items went unheard.

Following in the woman's footsteps, other customers at the golawallahs too asked the vendor to quickly serve them their golas before AMC raided the place.

Such incidents reflect our efforts to curb unhealthy habits. But it seems that the desire to eat tasty - and unhealthy -- delicacies has made people lose their minds, added Solanki. "If something goes wrong with their health, we will be blamed first, but it is their responsibility too to help us in this endeavour, " said Solanki.

Unfazed by the people's anger, AMC seized and destroyed 500 kg of unhealthy ice and 50 bottles of syrup from more than 25 gola vendors.
