The invite that went into public domain soon after it was delivered became a bone of contention, with Swaraj launching a no-holds-bar attack on the home minister for “leaking the confidential letter” to the media. “If he wants to keep the security arrangements confidential, why has he leaked the letter?” she thundered.
Nevertheless she decided to meet Chidambaram. The meeting will be held at 10 am on Thursday. Swaraj had raised the issue of threat to Varun’s life from the Chhota Shakeel gang in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. She charged the home minister with undermining the threat by not providing him ‘Z’ category security.
Highly-placed sources in the home ministry said apart from sharing details of the increased security already provided to Varun under ‘Y’ category, Sushma was likely to be confronted with intercepts and intelligence reports pointing to certain inter-gang rivalries leading to Varun’s lawyer Siddharth Luthra featuring on the hit list. Swaraj had charged the security agencies on Tuesday with not naming Varun while pinpointing that his counsel was on the hit list.
The sources hinted at the strong possibility of Chidambaram cornering the BJP leader by showing “proof” that the threat was in no way directly to Varun. The Pilibhit MP’s security had been enhanced to ‘Y’ special with the deployment of more personal security officers and other related facilities during his stay in Delhi. He has also been provided a pilot and an escort vehicle with 10 house guards.
In his letter to Sushma, the home minister said since the disclosure of details of Varun’s security in the Lok Sabha would defeat the purpose, he had decided to take her into confidence.
