The additional sessions judge PB Desai has approved examination of witness in the sensational Chetan Patel alias Chetan Battery murder case through video conferencing. Earlier, prosecution lawyer, NN Prajapati had urged the court for permission as the witnesses were being threatened by the main accused Gova Rabari and his gang members.

Chetan Patel alias Chetan Battery was killed and two others were seriously injured when two groups of prisoners clashed inside Sabarmati Central jail on August 7, 2005. Chetan, who was serving a seven-year term for murder, was stabbed in the stomach and died on the spot. Another inmate had his throat slit with a sharp weapon, while another person suffered a knife wound. Gova Rabari, the main accused was arrested and later shifted to Baroda central jail from Sabarmati central jail. Two other co-accuseds in the case, Viha Sartan and Teja Vaju were also shifted to the Baroda jail for creating nuisance here.

Sources said that main reason behind holding video conferencing in the case is that even after more than four years only 12 out of the 35 witnesses have recorded their statements in the case.

Prajapati said, “Prosecution wanted to examine more witnesses in the case. Taking into account the regular threat issued by Gova Rabari gang members and keeping the security of the witnesses in mind, the court has granted permission to examine the witness through video conferencing.” There are 35 witnesses in the incident who are lodged at different jails of the State. Moreover, there are 13 accused in the case including Gova Rabari, Viha Sartan, Teja Vaju, Vishal Nayak and Sunil Mankori. Rabari, Sartan and Teja are lodged at Baroda jail.
