Charge sheet filed in Surat bomb case

Twelve persons have been charged with planting bombs in various parts of Surat in July 2008.

Finally, after a year and half, the Surat Crime Branch officials have filed a charge sheet against

Mohammed Tanvir, Mohammed Yashin and Mohammed Anik in Surat bomb planting case in the month of July 2008. The three were involved in planting a bomb on a tree in Maharana Pratap garden in Surat.

The charge sheet was filed against all the three on the basis of documentary evidence gathered by Surat Crime Branch officials and information provided by the security guard of the garden.

Earlier, on Monday, Surat Crime Branch filed 14 supplementary charge sheets against 12 persons including Mohammed Tanvir, Mohammed Yashin, Mohammed Anik, Dr Ahmad Mirza Mohammed Ansar and Mohammed Irfan who hail from Madhya Pradesh at the court of metropolitan magistrate GM Patel.

The trail will start at session court of Justice Bela Trivedi. All the twelve persons have been charged with planting bombs at Varachha, Kapodara, Mahidharpura, Umra and other parts of the city.

The total charge sheets filed in the case is now 76. The charge sheet also includes suspected Indian Mujahideen members Amir Raza Khan, Riyaz Bhatkal and Abdus Subha alias Tauqueer as absconders.

According to the investigating officer, Tanveer is accused of providing logistic support for planting the bombs as well as placing explosives in different parts of Surat city. Zahir was involved in giving logistic support to the bomb planters.

The accused have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Explosive Substance Act and various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 120(B) (waging war against the state).

Over two dozen unexploded bombs were recovered and defused by the bomb squad from various places in Surat, a couple of days after the July 26 Ahmedabad serial blasts which claimed 57 lives. Most of the explosives were found from Varacha area, where a large number of diamond cutting and polishing units are located.
