Parents of students of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) want the varsity to make changes in their existing system. The parents, who met GTU vice-chancellor Akshai Aggarwal, also intend to form a committee and will meet on Sunday to discuss the procedure for the same.

Sharing information about the issues they want to take up, a parent, Harshad Rawal, said that they have suggested that GTU change its examination system. "As per the current exam system, 70% weightage is given to marks of the university exam while the remaining 30% marks are for other assessments. We want GTU to take 100-mark test so that students work hard to get good marks and there is no easy escape at the college level," he said.

There was also a suggestion that the varsity should make 90% attendance compulsory for students so that they attend classes regularly. According to him, the existing rule of 75% attendance allows students to bunk classes. He said, they have also recommended that marks of practical examinations be included in the marksheet in all the semesters, as against the current system of considering practical marks of only the last two semesters.

Student election in-charge at GU offers to step down

The rivalry between the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has taken an ugly turn ahead of the student senate elections. Citing reason of facing threats from the students’ body, MD Pandey, student senate election in-charge at Gujarat University (GU), has offered to quit the post. According to Dr Trivedi, who received a letter from Pandey in the matter, a group of students had ‘gheraoed’ the latter on his way home and threatened him with dire consequences.

“He wants to step down from this additional duty of handling the senate elections. However, his request has been rejected,” said Trivedi. He hinted that the group might be from the NSUI, as Pandey had cancelled candidature of NSUI representatives due to an incomplete form. Pandey works as an assistant registrar, but was given the additional election duty recently.
