A day after demanding deployment of central security forces at the Mullaperiyar dam site, DMK, a key constituent of the UPA, on Tuesday night alleged the Centre has not taken any step so far to prevent acts of violence against Tamils in the area.

"There are reports about violence against people from Tamil Nadu (in Kerala). Neither the Kerala government has come forward to prevent such acts nor the Central government, which is duty bound to prevent such things, has come forward so far," DMK chief M Karunanidhi told reporters here.

Incidents of violence and vandalism have been reported on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border in the past few days with vehicles from this state being allegedly vandalised.

He said if such a situation prolonged, the party's working committee would take a suitable decision over it.

The party's stand has already been made clear to the Supreme Court-appointed empowered Committee headed by Justice AS Anand, Karunanidhi said.

The DMK chief recalled his letter to Justice Anand, demanding that the Kerala government should be advised to stop whipping up "fear psychosis" among the people over the safety of the dam.

He had said Central security forces should be deployed at the dam site till the issue is resolved.

In the letter, Karunanidhi had also requested to Justice Anand that Kerala's demand for reducing the water level in the dam to 120 ft should not be accepted. The Supreme Court has already permitted raising the water level to 142 ft, he had said.
