CBI court frames charges against Aftab Ansari

Ansari, who confessed to his offence, has requested the court to conduct his trial as soon as possible.

The Special CBI court judge RM Parmar, on Thursday, framed charges against dreaded gangster turned terrorist Aftab Ansari in connection with the 2001 arms and ammunition cache seizure case from Santhalpur in Patan district registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

"The court framed charges against Ansari under section 120B (conspiracy) as well as under various sections of the Arms Act and Explosives Act and posted further hearing on May 10," said RH Meena, counsel for the CBI. He further said, "Ansari has sought the trial to be heard through video conferencing from a jail in West Bengal. But the court will decide the issue at the next hearing." Meanwhile, Ansari sought possession of his belongings seized by CBI when he was arrested in the case. According to CBI counsel, Ansari has urged the court to give him back his Rado wrist watch, a Levi's leather wallet and two ATM cards.  Ansari has already confessed his offence and urged the court to conduct the trial at the earliest. He has not hired a lawyer and is arguing his case himself.

Ansari, who is accused along with Azam Chima and Akhtar Bashi Ahmed, both of whom, according to the CBI, are terrorists belonging to the Pakistan based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and wanted in the case.  The two accused have already served 10 years imprisonment in the case. However, the trial against Ansari is pending as he is lodged in Alipore jail in West Bengal. 

According to CBI, Ansari funded the arms cache and instructed his accomplices to take delivery. He is under a death sentence in American Centre attack case in Kolkata. He also faces a life sentence in shoes baron Parth Protim Burman's abduction case. 

His gang was involved in abduction of Rajkot  jewellers Bhaskar and Paresh Parekh.
