Deputy chief minister of Penang province in Malaysia Dr P Ramasamy today said he had rejected the official invitation to participate in the 'Bharatiya Pravasi Divas,' last year because India had "failed" to protect hundreds of Tamils in Sri Lanka and 'supported' the island government in the "killings of Tamils".

Inaugurating a two-day "World Tamil Protection Conference", organised by Puthiya Tamizhagam, a Dalit-based party, he said he was pained when prime minister Manmohan Singh talked about Palastine situation during last year's Pravasi Divas but did not utter a word about Sri Lanka where "thousands of Tamils were killed."

Stating that the ruling parties at the Centre and Tamil Nadu had failed to hear the 'screams of thousands of Tamils' in Sri Lanka, Ramasamy said in order to find a permanent solution to sufferings of Tamils across the world, he had accepted the invitation extended by Puthiya Tamizhagam leader Dr K Krishnasamy to attend the conference.

The need of the hour was a strong organisation at world level to raise the voice of Tamils and to protect them, since Tamils were living in Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, Canada and various other parts of the world, he said.

Ramasamy said he would not participate in the World Tamil Classical Conference, scheduled to be hosted by here in June
by the Tamil Nadu government, as it had failed to 'protect and
take up the interests of Sri Lankan Tamils,' with the centre.
