The state cabinet on Tuesday cleared the proposal on Namma Metro Phase 2, which would cost Rs27,000 crore.

Briefing the media after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, water resources minister Basavaraj Bommai said the 72-km project would be completed by 2017. Expressing happiness at the cabinet decision, BMRCL managing director N Sivasailam said preliminary work for Phase 2 would take off immediately. “It should take about six months for the approval from the Centre. In the meantime, we will begin work on detailed design construction, call tenders and other basic preliminary projects,” he added.

On the challenges faced by the project, he said: “We have the experience of Phase 1 to guide us. Our basic challenges relate to management during construction, which we will try to improve further.”

The core project aside, Sivasailam added that the main focus will be on design.

“Through better designing, the idea is to devise a systematic framework and ensure that each component has a specific design,” he said.
