People living in the houses and slums behind the barrel market in Narol Industrial Estate near Chandola Lake are cursing their builders for misleading them about the infrastructure in the area. For the past few days, residents of the area have been living in hellish conditions caused by overflowing sewage.

The industrial area, which falls in Behrampura ward, is now home to nearly 8,000 families living in societies such as Janata Row houses, Bismillah Nagar, Shah Alam Nagar and Madni Nagar.

Local sources said the problem had occurred because the drainage lines of a majority of houses were attached to the main pipeline carrying chemical waste to the Pirana sewage treatment plant. Since the pipeline is now overloaded with the extra burden of household waste, it gets choked. Waste water from households is unable to flow out normally and overflows out onto the roads along with chemical waste.

"We want a solution immediately to this long-standing problem," said Ghulam Ahmad, a resident of the area. "But neither the BJP, nor the Congress nor the AMC seems interested in helping us."
A senior AMC inspector of Behrampura ward who is sympathetic to the plight of the local residents said builders had misled residents to sell their housing schemes easily.

"The builders didn't bother to build underground sewage tanks that were large enough to handle the waste of the housing societies," he said. "Neither did they take any permission to build the houses in the industrial area."

He added that the area actually falls under Zone D, which means that it is exclusively meant for industries. "The pipeline is not meant for household sewage of almost 25,000 people. That is why it has started overflowing."

Residents are also angry with Badruddin Shaikh, leader of opposition in the AMC and councillor from Behrampura ward. But he says that he cannot be blamed for the situation as the area was added to Behrampura ward recently. However, on Thursday, he made a representation to the commissioner about the problem and demanded immediate action.
