The announcement of her appointment as police constable was made by DGP Khoda at a police darbar at Rajouri to review the security situation and security measures today.

Her younger brother Aijaz will also be appointed as constable in the police department from his present status of a special police officer.

Rukhsana and her brother were appointed as SPOs in police on contratual basis and at a salary of Rs3,000, but she turned down the offer and demanded a permanent job in police or central para-military forces.

Khoda said, "There is need to encourge girls like her for the bold act. This would encourage other to follow her."

During her visit to border district of Rajouri, president Pratibha Patil spent 15 minutes with Rukhsana and praised her for the bold act and courage to take on the militant.

"My message to the president was that girls should be imparted necessary arms training to defend themselves. There is an urgent need for self defence in remote and mountainous belts," she had said.
