The Vastrapur police caught a bookie red-handed on Thursday. The man was taking live bets for the Test match between India and Australia when he was caught.

Vastrapur police constable Chetan Bharwad received a tip-off about a bookie operating from his residence in a posh apartment behind AlphaOne Mall near Vastrapur Lake.

Based on the tip-off, the cops raided flat number A-803 at Sansarya Tower and caught the bookie, Kamlesh aka Kapil Halani. When the raid was conducted, Halani (27) was taking live bets on the Test match through his network of mobile phones, laptop and live telecast on his LCD TV.

Police seized 23 mobile phones, one LCD TV, one Tata Sky set-top box, one laptop and one multi-mobile charger _ all worth Rs96,000.

According to the police, Halani had given code numbers to each mobile phone and took bets according to the numbers. After receiving a bet, he used to confirm the deal on his laptop.

During the raid, Halani was the only person present in the flat. According to police, he is not employed, and does not have a criminal record.

To uncover his links with other bookies, the police will look at all the details from the seized laptop and numbers stored in his mobile phones.
