Delhi government today said Blueline buses will be a thing of the past within the next one year, as their phase-out has already begun in the city.

Transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said the government has already cancelled permits of 1,111 Blueline buses and the process to completely remove them from the city streets has been expedited.

He said only 2,545 Blueline buses are now plying on various routes, and they will be replaced within one year by swanky low-floor buses of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

Giving statistics of accidents involving Blueline buses, he said 182 people have lost their lives in accidents in 2005, while the number of people killed by these buses in 2006 was 163.

One hundred and eight people have lost their lives in 2008 while in 2009, 115 people were killed in accidents involving Blueline buses.

Lovely said at present the DTC has 3,837 buses, and it will have a fleet of around 6,600 modern buses during the prestigious Commonwealth Games next year.

He said Government has already spent Rs 265 crore in procuring low-floor buses for DTC.

The minister said the government is determined to put in place a modern bus fleet ahead of next year's Commonwealth Games in the city.

Outside the assembly, the minister said the government has asked all the Blueline buses plying on the routes linking Noida to withdraw their buses by today.

"Permits will be cancelled of those buses who have not complied with the government order," he said.

The transport department had issued notices to owners of 250 Blueline buses operating on the routes linking Noida to stop plying.

"This is part of our Blueline phase-out plan. We will take action against them if they fail to comply with the order," Lovely said.

A transport department official said over 200 DTC buses have been deployed to ply on routes linking Noida.

He said a letter has been sent to Uttar Pradesh transport department to rationalise fare structure of the city bus service plying on Noida routes.

"Our fare structure and their fare structure is different. We want to have same fare structure for all the buses plying on Noida routes," he said.
