The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants to fight the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in May 2012 on the basis of a comprehensive development agenda and on the promise of restoring law and order in the state. And the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for 2014 will be decided by the party’s central parliamentary board.

“We may name a prime ministerial candidate before the election, or we may fight the election without naming one and then choose one after the election,” said senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh in an informal interview with the DNA.

Singh is the party’s frontbencher in the Lok Sabha and the main opposition party’s prominent interlocutor in the house.

He was president of the BJP as well as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. A section of critics are of the opinion that he did not do well in either of the jobs. But he remains unflappable and he is fully engaged in reviving the faded fortunes of the party in the UP and looks realistically at what would happen in 2014.

He said contest in UP is between Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and the BJP, and that the Congress is not a serious contender because it is much too weak as an organisation in the state.

He said the people of UP are looking for an alternative to both BSP and SP, and sees an opportunity in this for his party “We will compare our tenure in government with that of SP and BSP, and the people will know who is better,” he said.

Singh said the party will present to the people of the state a comprehensive developmental agenda, the promise of improving the law and order situation which is almost non-existent today.
