Congress today stepped up its attack on BJP questioning the continuance of Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who faces corruption charges.
Within hours of CBI carrying out raids at the residences of former telecom minister A Raja in connection with the second generation mobile telephony spectrum scam, Congress today stepped up its attack on BJP questioning the continuance of Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who faces corruption charges.
"If CBI has taken any step, then they have taken steps as per the requirements of the investigation...Congress and the government believe that rule of law should prevail and there should be no interference in the working of the statutory organisations," party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters outside the Parliament.
He was responding to BJP's attack on the government after CBI raids at the residences of Raja and other Telecom officials. The Congress leader reacted sharply when pointed out that BJP was dubbing the raids as an eyewash.
"Saying that it is an eyewash, smells of politics. Those who don't want to act against corruption, they think everything is an eyewash...Before pointing fingers at the Congress, BJP should remove Yeddyurappa. These are the standards of the BJP," Tewari said.
"Yesterday, Karnataka high court issued a notice to chief minister BS Yeddyurappa in a corruption case and soon after that BJP President Nitin Gadkari reached Bangalore to pat him. This is the conduct, character and functioning of the BJP. The problem with the BJP is that those who are the connivers and the condoners of corruption treat every activity as an eyewash," he alleged.
The Congress spokesperson also attacked the main opposition party over the non-functioning of Parliament for the last four weeks.
"Parliament has been held to ransom by the opposition. Not allowing the Parliament to function for the sake of politics is not good for the country and democracy. People who demand a joint parlianmentary committee have not been able to tell what it can do. PAC is doing its work and its head Murli Manohar Joshi has fast-tracked its work and CBI is also working. The Supreme Court is also doing it work," he said.
Asked to comment on JD-U chief Sharad Yadav's conditional demand for a special session of Parliament and a larger discussion on corruption, Tewari said, "We are always ready for debate on the issue and everything would be clear."
"From the first licenses in 1995 till 3G in 2010, we are ready for a debate. They are running away from debate. I don't know what they want to hide," he said referring to some "RSS-affiliated organisations" named in terror activities.
He said it was the opposition which should first get ready for a debate and alleged "they had been running away from debate to hide the truth"
