The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has extended support for the creation of a separate Telangana state, saying the party favours smaller states that would pave the way for good governance and faster development.

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said, "Smaller states would develop faster with transparent administration and accountability which is witnessed in states like Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand that were formed when the NDA government was in power at the Centre."

Claiming that there was nothing wrong in creating smaller states, Nirmala said both the Telangana and coastal Andhra regions of Andhra Pradesh would develop faster if a separate Telangana were created.

Asked why a separate Telangana was not created during the NDA's rule, she said it was not possible as the Telugu Desam Party, one of the main constitutents of the National Democratic Alliance, had opposed the move and there was lack of unanimity among political parties.

Regarding a possible Naxalite threat in smaller states, she said the problem exists in bigger states as well. "Every state is faced with a Naxal problem and it is not confined to smaller states," the BJP politician said. "Bigger states like West Bengal are also facing the problem."

Nirmala said the problems being faced by the people in the country today were due to lack of good governance. She accused the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre of failing to fulfil the aspirations of the people.

"BJP is at the forefront in taking up critical national issues like corruption, black money and lack of good governance in the country. The party is creating awareness among the people on the importance of good governance which is lacking in the UPA government," she said.

Referring to the forthcoming elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Assam, she said the party would improve its position in Kerala and Tamil Nadu as the governments in these states had failed to deliver corruption-free
administration to the people.

Nirmala was here on her way to Kakarapalli village in Srikakulam district, where two persons were killed in police firing recently when they were opposing the establishment of a thermal power plant.
