Bank cashier arrested for Rs43L theft

The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) has arrested a cashier of Karnavati Cooperative Bank for theft of Rs43 lakh from the strong room of the bank.

Sources said the cashier had lost lakhs of rupees in the share market. Milind Kothari, the head cashier of the bank was arrested by the crime branch and is under police remand for five days.

Kothari lost Rs35 lakh in the share market."He used 12 different credit cards and incurred a debt, as interest on the credit cards mounted," a crime branch official said.

On March 30, 2009, Rs43 lakh was stolen from the strong room of the bank in Bapunagar. A case was registered with the Odhav police station.

During the course of investigation, the crime branch found that, Kothari had 12 credit cards of different companies issued in the name of his father.

"He used the cards to invest money in the share market," said an official.
Kothari was the head clerk of the bank and had easy access to the keys of the strong room of the bank.  "He took Rs43 lakh from a cupboard of the strong room, stuffed it in his pockets and walked out of the strong room," said a police source.
